People were still focused on earthly operations under lamp light but others could see them very clearly if they went outside.
Modern cities are grid after grid of street lamps etc, some people never leave the city and when they do they go to another city, or stay close to them.
Old cities were dim, how could they not be if they are so bright now due to mass electric lights..
Your picture is a tad more detailed then what I have seen with my own eyes, but if the weather is on your side you can see pretty much that.
