Right now in the US we have for profit prisons where prisons get to sell the labor of their prisoners without paying the prisoners, the only exception to slavery in the 13th Amendment. This makes incarcerating people a monetary gain and encourages these prisons to lobby for increased numbers of people jailed for lesser and lesser crimes.
Violent crime in the US has fallen since the 1980s and yet we incarcerate more people than ever before. This is ridiculous and is directly caused by the US building more and more prisons.
