We pretty much do use fusion bombs in thermonuclear bombs, they just use a fission bomb to create the pressure and heat necessary to start a fusion reaction. For all intends and purposes we already have what you're talking about, I doubt being pure fusion would make it much more effective, the fission section barely takes up that much space to start with.
