A quadruple-bonded C2 molecule might exist at the low temperatures of space, but it is unlikely to be stable at ambient temperatures and pressures. Remember that carbon has a small atomic radius, and in the case of a C2 quadruple bond, that is 8 electrons packed into a very small region. The amount of repulsion would be immense.

iirc the energy required for two carbon atoms to form a quadruple bond is higher than the energy required for the atoms to form a double bond + form two lone pairs due to the shape of the orbitals (more degrees of freedom for pi bonds than sigma bonds).

Assuming you somehow get two carbon atoms to kiss, how stable would the bond be? Fall apart if you look at it wrong or so stable that it'll outlive all of us?

I was about to waste your time asking if we could instead stick 6 carbon atoms together to make a tiny carbon cube, but then I again remembered to think anout angles. And then I realised I was just thinking of fullerene so I googled it and found that the smallest possible buckyball is C20. So now I'm happy I guess.
