It means absolute value. Basically any value that you input between those brackets, when evaluated, will be a positive number.

Probably absolute value:
|x| = x if x>=0, -x if x<=0
It can mean a bunch of other things too, like the cardinality of a set, the number of elements in it.
A={1,5,77,98}
