However, $p^2=\gamma^2m^2v^2=m^2v^2/\big(1-(v/c)^2\big)$ . The student may isolate v and show $\gamma=\sqrt{1+(p/mc)^2}$ .
Finally, we get the equation that makes polniggers seethe with anger:
$E^2=\left(\gamma mc^2\right)^2=\left(1+\left(\frac{p}{mc}\right)^2\right)\left(mc^2\right)^2=\left(pc\right)^2+\left(mc^2\right)^2$
now simply let velocity equal zero and E=mc^2 and ur done :^]

Also, any mathematical derivation aside, the question can also be interpreted as one of physics - and then no derivation without reference to experimental data can make one more sure of it

Correct, $p=\gamma mv$ follows promptly from the fundamental postulates of SR (which are, in fact, very much in line with experiment). Everything else in the fp is regular-ass mechanics a highschooler should be able to follow.
