As stated in your image: pressure and heat. Heat rises about 1 degree every 100 meters. To get a functioning steam machine you need temperatures above 500 degrees at high pressures. So that would be 50k meters underground at least.

There aren't too many national parks where the crust is thin enough because is near a plate boundary, or on top of a magma plume. Yellowstone being the only exception I can think of.

its not because its coming at the expense of western projects that have the potential to actually produce power. there are no geothermal powerplants east of the rockies for good reason, geothermal has little to no potential there, which is what the map you replied to displays.

Geothermal has actually gotten lot cheaper in recent years with better drilling techniques like fracking and because oil drilling itself is on the down which means more drillers available meaning lower prices.

Geothermal works best when the rock is porous and lets a bunch of water trough to transfer heat. If you have solid rock you can't get lot of heat out of it, even if you drill into it the water will quickly cool the rock surrounding the pipe and stop working. If you instead fracture the rock you now have much larger area for the water to interact with the stone increasing your heat output. Also the existence of fracking itself means you have better drilling techniques which naturally helps when drilling for heat.
