they are used to mix the ink when you shake it. some inks tend to separate after a while and have to be stirred from time to time. like the rattle ball in a spray paint can

Looks like a ball of silica to me. Silica is commonly used as a dessicant. You probably burst a packet of them in your school bag or something.

they seal the cartridge, if you put a new one in the pen it gets pushed inside the cartridge.
