Why did they settle on a 10 multiplier for the metric system?

Makes little sense. The only benefit I was told is that "you can multiply by 10 just by writing a 0 at the end, so it's nice and easy to use" but this would be true even if the system was 2, 7 or 900000 based
12 or 60 would have been much more logical and easy to use, we have used that for measuring time for milleniums
