There was a caretaker at Oxford in 1870-1910ish who was very capable but never had the opportunity to formally study. In the evenings when he would go around cleaning the offices of the various professors if they happened to be in their office working he would say - lay it on me brother and ask them what they were working on to expand his knowledge. He eventually became known as the layman among the professors for this phrase.
