using a drug example, say in the placebo group of 100 people only 2 people died, that means a 2% chance of dying with the placebo. in the control group say 1 people out of 100 die, 1% chance then. The drug companies are allowed to say the drug increases your chance of surviving the disease by 50% (number of people that died on control group divided by number of people that died on placebo group).
The actual reduction would be 2% - 1% which would be a 1% reduction
