Totally hypothetical and probably not even /sci/ futurism but...

What if we could have "flying cars"? I don't mean like planes, in this case, because I don't really think that's what people would really want if they thought about for 3 more seconds. It annoys me that people still think that's what the take is from the sci-fi desire for cars. Search for flying cars, and you see people still aren't getting on my wavelength.
I mean like hovercrafts. I imagine them as vehicles that can only go over certain eh... magnetized? "streets" These cars would hover over the street and be limited to several specified distances above the street. This could mean less jams, because there's basically always another lane someone can go into without even physically making one. The cars would be designed to only go over the road at very specific distances, and of course you'd have to regulate upward/downward "merges". Maybe only at certain places and the mechanism to even go up will be locked until you reach such points on the lane.
I mean, would this even be possible assuming we could somehow make hovering car things and this sort of "road" infrastructure? Could it really improve things, or would there be too many ramifications? I find it difficulty, somehow, to work out the cost/benefit. It seems like it could improve traffic, but I feel like so many questions arise that there's just no way it would just go that way so easily even if we could do it.
Could this kind of flight/hovering be regulated, even? You'd have to be aware of the situation from all directions of traffic when merging up or down, but...
I don't know if this would be better or just an idea that dies that dies off quickly after a few tech news articles. I'm trying to wrap my head around how different it would be from today, but I guess I'm just not good at visualizing things.
Well, that and I don't drive because of where I live, so maybe I'm just not good at imagining driving. Then there's noise pollution issues etc....
