how long would the sample have to be before most people would fail to recognize the repetition?

no, its just an example, but i imagine that it it would be trivial to recognize a pattern in audio with such a short period.
there is some value between a single constant tone, and infinitely many unique notes, where there is a loss of the ability to notice a pattern.

I think there were looped auditory illusions that seemed like the pitch increased though. You might be able to get away with a bell curve but not a direct implication for every single whitenoise-like recording.

Here are two samples of white noise. One of them is white noise continuously generated for 10 seconds. The other is 1 second of white noise looped ten times.

sample X warbles, regularly. it goes through pulses.

i just used "white noise" because it represented randomness. i don't know if it is the optimal way to present random noise. and i guess it depends on how people recognize patterns-- what people pull from "noise" to represent "order"
