>>13209607Can free will even be discussed on level of species or civilizations? There are many things that an average human may oppose, like extreme wealth divide, war, various immoral acts, and yet they persist as integral part of humanity.
But I would consider it more of a question of thermodynamics than anything else. Complex systems require a lot of energy upkeep to maintain high degrees of order, and the cheapest and most readily and easily accessible energy still comes from fossile fuels. So even if most of the people would prefer clean energy, our society will naturally gravitate towards cheapest one to became more and more complex at the lowest costs, and there seems to be only so much we can consciously do about it (look at the failure of previous climate agreements for example). Its like water flowing in the path of least resistance.
