I have a hard time imagining either people, metal projectiles and explosive propulsion being fundementally surpassed for a long time.

It'll be replaced as soon as we can make an energy form denser than gunpowder (per gram), and one that is equally stable at room temperature (ie, no liquids or gases). Batteries are almost there, I have the feeling it'll be fuel cells that ultimately forces the jump.

As for next-gen weapons it'd be:

>railguns (the most typical form of weapon because of it's inherent durability - 0 moving parts)
>plasma railguns (same as the above, but with gases that reduce durability. Will probably be a typical anti-armor weapon)
>lasers (fragile due to fiber optics, but highly precise and with sufficient power great for sniping and projectile interception. Already used in some antimissile systems)
>laser missiles (ie, a laser-powered missile. Consider that if we can make a laser rifle, we can make beamed power practical)

We know most of this can work, the only missing element is compact power. In the 1940s it was going to be nuclear fusion, which is where a lot of these ideas first entered mainstream thought.

Yeah compact energy is the big one, are batteries and cells that close already? I thought that was hype mostly as of now. I also thought railguns we have atm wore down very fast due to friction at the rails, but also being way better at transfering energy to solid projectiles than coilguns.

There's only a tiny amount of gunpowder in a bullet and most of a gun's volume is either unproductively used or reserved for additional bullet storage. And even if they were a little bigger a lot of people would instantly ditch their oldschool guns for a genuine pew pew laser.

Firearms will always be around, if only as a defensive sidearm. They are just too durable and reliable in a military environment. I could see explosive microdrones becoming a thing for antipersonnel applications though.

Sacrificial cathode guns. There won't be a sound or a flash. Press a button on something the size of a wallet to shoot clusters of atoms, smaller than a grain of sand, at several thousand rounds per second and the target quickly becomes a bloodied mess as if their body is covered by pin pricks, or if the aim is steady and focused enough, a small hole will bore straight through the target.

The technology has been around for a while, but until someone can make a semi-decent armor to protect against it, a weapon that can turn a person sitting next to you into a pile of goo so stealthily you might not even notice it until you smell them is too scary of a concept for powerful figures to allow to go public.

for personal weapons i think gunpowder is here for a very, very, long time. Logistically and practically self contained cartridges which have the energy source and the projectile stored in a relatively stable and inert package and take decades to degrade is simply useful

Weapons on vehicles of various sorts might become caseless em propelled some time this century
