Memorization techniques were absolute key in ancient worlds. From Plato to Archimedes to Newton to Buddha. Everyone understood the usefulness of memories. Its only in the last 50 years or so that people began shunning memorization for whatever reason.

What 50 years have you been living in? Memory is no better or worse than it was thousands of years ago unless you include the use of an external memory as well as instantly accessed external memory. It's clear memorization isn't the key here.

Are you serious? Euler knew the Aeneid by heart, and he had memorized a shit ton of prime numbers. Most great men had impressive memory (like von Neumann), even more so in Antiquity since books weren't cheap and there was no Google.

Memorizing numbers is just a matter of labor. It's nothing no laymen couldn't do given time. How you even manage to think that's impressive is beyond me. Poems even more so, since the beginning of time, humans have been able to tell stories without written inscriptions. Now tell me if it's worth your time to actually partake in memorizing those things? Took only a second of realization, didn't it? It's not. That's why imagination is such a beast in comparison.

Pretty sure Newton was smarter than Leibniz and Archimedes was smarter than Aristotle.
