(1) I am great at cooking, although I can be a little heavy on stuff like vinegar or salt or pepper at times, because sometimes I get lazy and eye-ball things. I smoke meat on a regular basis, except during winter. I make jambalaya. I've heard that the hot smoked salmon I make is the best you've ever had. I do a lot of other stuff too.

(2) I'm in an MS program for discrete math

1. Yes, I usually cook with a majority of unprocessed items and I'm pretty good at eyeballing the process.
2. Depends on which maths but in general I guess. I understand concepts but occasionally have trouble applying them.

the preface to this is that everyone thinks they're a good cook (a la driving) because they do it regularly. The majority are not.

I don't know. I guess I'm above average in my class group, but that likely isn't saying much. We shall see, as I need to work so I'm dropping out to work and self study mathematics. The problem with mathematics, is I can't trust my intuition or instincts like I do with cooking. I have developed this bad habit of second guessing myself with mathematics and never learning my first thought was correct.
I guess this is due to bad experiences with mathematics from the start.

To explain this a little better.
I look at some ingredients and imagine what it tastes like and what the other one tastes like and based on that I can summise that it might work. Obviously this isn't flaw proof, as some chemicals in food react in ways that are difficult to predict without knowing the chemical makeup.
But I would say it works 60-70% of the time and that's good enough for me.
