I am not a physicist I am just a random internet schizo so if this idea already exists or is retarded please forgive me.
Here's my idea:
Light and sound are pretty much the same thing.
"In physics, sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave, through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. " (Wikipedia)
It can be represented also as a particle:
"In physics, a phonon is a collective excitation in a periodic, elastic arrangement of atoms or molecules in condensed matter, specifically in solids and some liquids. Often referred to as a quasiparticle, it is an excited state in the quantum mechanical quantization of the modes of vibrations for elastic structures of interacting particles. Phonons can be thought of as quantized sound waves, similar to photons as quantized light waves." (again, Wikipedia)
So, I posit that light is a sound wave, but moving through an "aethereal" (extra-dimensional?) transmission medium instead of a material one. Its changing speed though physical matter could be explained by this "aethereal matter" (hereafter, Aether) being displaced by matter.
So, just like sound move slower in a less dense matter, as would light move slower through a less dense Aether.
Light and Sound behave in other ways that are similar, such as the fact that moving between mediums can affect their frequency, or that they can both be generated through Amplification by Stimulation of Electromagnetic Radiation, with a LASER and SASER respectively.
What do you think of this concept, /sci/?
P.S. For the chads that read this whole thing, here's a study that found sound waves may carry negative mass and thus fall upwards in gravity. If I am right about how aether would work this may have implications to light as well. (https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.122.084501)
