Some plants use tryptamines as a defence mechanism (psilocyn), ergine occurs in certain fungi and plants with unknown function, DMT occurs in many many plants, even humans and is used as both a defence mechanism as well as a "messenger" molecule to serotonin. All of these will cause psychedelic effects because they are structurally similar to serotonin, some because they are "meant" to, some because lifeforms will evolve to use similarly structured molecules, sometimes for similar purposes, sometimes for different purposes.
