Check out Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology. It explains how stimulants are used to treat ADHD.
Basically you want to increase tonic dopamine release while avoiding high doses / high variation of blood levels of medicine throughout the day to prevent phasic dopamine release increase.
Non-stimulants are just worse stimulants for people with substance abuse problems, so avoid them. If you abuse your meds, they won't help. So don't.There are lots of good sources on the internet on how ADHD works and it's treated. I'm not going to spoonfeed you and Stahl's is good enough for your purposes.
>but I don't have adhd!
ADHD is basically falling on the low end of the distribution curve of attention. You can think of the distribution of attention like IQ, some are low and high and most people fall somewhere near the average. If you're making this post, there's a good chance you fall on the low side of the curve.
