Every step along the way must have been seen as a freak by others. The failures were probably ostracised, while those who had actually useful mutations survived, but the vast majority of them were probably batshit crazy compared to the rest of their kinds.
The civilization we live in is completely unique and insane compared to any other time in human history. If you talk about the current times to Plato, Caesar, Descartes or anybody from ancient times they would think you insane. You would not have the same problem with any other time or place in history.

This might be enough to start a process of speciation. As the genotypal cognitive base of humanity evolve, what is considered "insane" will also evolve.
I'm not saying liberals are not insane mind you. But maybe they will not be considered insane in the future. Or maybe it is the Mormons or Amish or Islamists who will be considered the only sane people in the world. Maybe on the contrary everyone in the current age will be considered insane at some point, the same way we now look at the people of the past.
