I'd suggest you to try to as much contact with "actual econ work" in uni through chapters, student associations, clubs, internships, undergraduate research and such, so that you can be sure of whether or not that's for you. Like I said earlier, you'll probably be okay as long as you dedicate your free time to the other stuff you also like.
But don't think too much about the "waste another year" thing. Once you get into uni, you'll see that not everyone comes in at age 18, and there's nothing bad about starting a few years "later". And of course, there's that cliché but necessary discourse on how losing one year is better than spending your whole life on something you don't enjoy.
