We are at the tail end. The star formation rate of the universe peaked about 6-10 billion years ago. Now the rate is lower by an order of magnitude, and decreasing. Simulations of galaxy formation show this trend will likely continue, and although star formation will continue for a long time, the contribution to the total amount of stars formed will be small. These simulations indicate that about 90% of the stars that will ever form have already formed now.
