Forgive my poor artistic skills but why does this happen? Why do we see the sky as if it was some huge concave bowl that curves down towards the horizon? Why is it that when you see a plane flying far away on the horizon it looks like it's flying "up" at a 45 degree angle?

the sky is a huge concave bowl that curves down to the horizon, but the edges of the bowl keep curving around until they meet directly below you, making it a sphere that you're inside of.

Except that the size of that curvature is way too large to produce this effect. The sky should look like a flat plane extending in all directions.

The entire sky exists at infinite focal distance as far as your eyes are concerned, and because the sky extends to/past the horizon you see each point of the sky as equally distant to you, creating the illusion of a hemisphere.

Nobody actually ever thought it was flat, it makes no sense, you can SEE the dome, but if it was a literal dome, you could get close to the edge, but you're always perfect center. Why? Because you are the center of the universe.

Flat earth maps were trying to say something and it wasn't about the physical shape of the earth or sky, but the appearance of it.
