The conventional definition of continent is more or less arbitrary, and depending on where you went to school there are anywhere between 4 and 8 continents.

Why is India considered a subcontinent?

Because "continent" is a somewhat arbitrary term on its own. Moroccans, Turks, Caucuses, none of them share much cultural or genetic ties with Europeans, so they, along with the Mediterranean, form a natural barrier. Same thing with the Urals. So Europe is distinguished not just by its land area, but by linguistic, religious, genetic and cultural ties.

It's like "sub-saharan Africa", "saharan Africa", "Western Asia" or "East Asia". They're not continents, but we make fine distinctions between them.

Africa is a continent. It's like how we make a distinction between East and West Europe.

Really, we should just discard the concept of continents altogether and just use genetic clusters.
