Tell them that speculation and rent seeking is not productive and they are using their intelligence to be parasites by helping corporate entities who would scrap any actually innovative technological developments for a quick buck. What do you consider to be automated? The FTC freaked out the first time someone hooked a PC up to a trading terminal to do automated trading and that wasn't very long ago. What was generating the "automated" trades in the telegraph days? If there were humans in the decision making loop, it wasn't automated.

Look up quantative trading job listings, they should have the requirements listed. ANN could be used for sure, but you could probably have decisions made in another algorithm in the time it takes for one artificial neuron to fire.
I'm assuming the thinking is done in some high performance language like C++.
