f'(x) is just better accept it. but it can not display taking the derivative in respect to something else then x such as y so you are basically required to use that stupid notation

There are some advantages.
For instance let $f ( x) = e^x + 2x$

You want to compute the derivative, you can write $f'(5)$ but if you do not want any reference to $f$ you can do :

$\frac{d}{dx} \left( e^x + 2x \right)_{ | x = 5 <br /> } = e^5 + 2$
