Scientists probably just see it as a hedonistic act, a necessity, something to get out of the way, If I =look at porn I'm enjoying it physically, but I'm also trying to derive utility from it, using it as inspiration, etc. That's why art/hentai is universally superior. Interesting scenery, technical appreciation of the art style, etdc. With actual porn, at BEST, you get feminine beauty with some genuineness (and from where shall that stem with a real woman who's having herself filmed or photographed doing lewd things, even if just fully clothed, striptease, masturbation), nice shot composition and lighting, maybe a gimmick like she's in an abandoned industrial area, wearing certain clothes, in the woods, whatever. Art has no such restrictions nor baggage drawn in, and often has net higher potential. Though of course there are certain things it can't capture or represent, as well.
so I guess the defense mechanism I employ for viewing erotic material is that I'm using porn more than it's using me.
