For all we know, there's a far better form of communication that we have yet to discover, and most civilizations that become technological rapidly abandon our current methods of long-distance communication when they become obsolete.
For example, if faster than light travel was ever developed there would be hardly any reason to ever use interstellar communications based on electromagnetic waves or light, since it would be faster to just send a ship with the information.
We may still expect to see leakage of local signals from other planets but they may be too weak to be detected from across interstellar distances or again, maybe other civilizations have developed something better that we aren't looking for.
However, the total lack of hard evidence/observations does seem to suggest that we are alone for now.
