1) Tesla's idea is predicated on transmission via "scalar" (transverse) propagation. It's not like inductive coupling like your image.
2) The energy would have been drawn directly from the Earth itself while using the voltage difference between the ionosphere and the surface. When Tesla was studying lightning he found that they weren't voltage discharges from the sky to the Earth, the bulk of the energy was drawn from all directions and concentrated into the bolt. It all formed at once, there was no clear propagation as such. Anyway, this is why wardenclyff had a massive rod deep within the Earth, the interior of the Earth would be the return part of the circuit and also the basis for the "free energy" to begin with.
