Math class isn't about learning math, it's about learning to follow instructions, i.e. memorize and apply algorithms. Forcing kids to learn to use the quadratic formula isn't to give them the skill of solving polynomial equations, it's to give them the skill of assembling a Big Mac. As you proceed through higher math classes the algorithms become less rigid and require more flexibility to apply, corresponding to jobs where you have more leeway for independent decisionmaking instead of having a boss standing over you all day telling you precisely what to do.
