To steer society. Currently leftism is in vogue, but liberal arts intellectuals have through history always spread the predominating ideology. In the Middle Ages it was Catholic scholasticism (Aquinas et al.), later it was Enlightenment thought, capitalism, now it's progressivism. The ruling class finds progressivism useful and needs people to spread its message. Gender studies graduates either end up working at Starbucks or they get employed by influential think tanks who plan to psyop your children into genital mutilation.

I have a friend who graduated from CSULB as a Comm major with a certificate in Mediation. The guy pulls in about 400k as an event planner and also as a judicial mediator between both parties. He’s an outlier, but he says there’s a lot of Comm majors in PR, investigative journalism, and radio.

History has a big conservative appeal, the glory of empires, tradition, the idea of decadent cycles, etc. Similarly, anthropology has a progressive appeal in justifying all the various kinds of primitive societies that have existed, it has a big feel-good, new-age draw. Also, most earlier anthropology is now seen as problematic or outdated in a way not even ancient history is. So there is a progressive methodical/values slant in anthropology, less so with history.
