It doesn't exist in the traditional sense of exist if it is not observed. It doesn't have a color, shape, temperature, etc if there is no observation.
The thing itself is not just a color or a shape or a temperature. There is something hidden which causes events to propogate such as photons bouncing.
These hidden things are what truly exist in an objective sense. There does not need to be an observer to have a photon bounce off of a cup. If that was needed, you would never see anything because there wouldn't be anything to observe.
Even the photon or cup are not really objective things, they point to a hidden existence.
When this mess of hidden existences interacting with each other forms the hidden existence that the word brain points to, subjective observation exists.
When you get down to it, subjective observation (consciousness) is just an advanced form of the interaction between things with a hidden existence.
