I've been doing some research for a /tg/ slash /lit/ project and could use some advice/insight. I'm not aiming for true, hard sci-fi, but I would like there to be some basis in reality rather than a bunch of technobabble and handwavium.
In short, what might be the first radio transmission that would be detectable by something 1,000 light years away? I am aware of the Arecibo Message that was sent to M13, but that was a deliberate and targeted signal. What I'm after is what could be a powerful enough signal/message/broadcast prior to that that would still be picked up. I can't seem to find a definitive answer one way or another.
Of course, if science wasn't to be followed to the letter, I could always use the "O Holy Night" broadcast in 1906. I'm fairly sure there's no way that could have leaked past the ionosphere but who knows.
