Hey /b, smoothbrain here, crying out for help

If I were to pour water on a very absorbent fabric and leave it out to dry, how would you estimate the real surface from which the water evaporates? I assume its harder than it looks right?

Yes. Just take the surface area and call it a day.
Otherwise you'd need an empirical formula or lots of approximations that are probably not worth the effort.

Unless you have significant airflow over the fabric, evaporation will be limited by the diffusion of moist air into the environment, so the effect of increased surface area will be minimal.

There are methods using dyes, where the dye sticks to the surface and reduces the concentration in solution. It is a method used in powders. I remember learning about this at university, but as I graduated 21 years ago, I have forgotten the details.
