the real answer is probably that most people don't know there exists math beyond computing calculus problems.

Unfortunately most people will point you toward engineering if you like math or physics to any extent whatsoever. I get it - especially since ABET is a really nice thing to have - but there needs to be a push to establish two things:
1) math is interesting enough to be studied for its own sake
2) math that is useful can and is regularly developed outside of engineering departments
3) the math that math people care about is (usually) serviced best in math, physics, and CS departments rather than the engineering departments

I'd go as far as saying that most of engineering has very little to do with math. Unless you get into very specific research topics, even thinking about studying engineering for the math/physics is a masochistic act
