Hello /sci. Biz refugee here. Will batteries like Teslas new 4680 cell ever scale enough to replace fossil fuels? Getting rid of unsustainable fossil fuel for energy is obvious but the amount of batteries we will require is enormous.
Every house in the USA will need at least a 30kwh battery and every car will need at least a 70kwh battery.
The USA has 284.5m cars and 128m houses meaning to replace fossil fuels we would require 20,000 gigawatt hours of storage just to keep up with current demand. Current US storage is a miniscule 0.708 gigawatt hours.
In 2021 the entire world produced less than 300 gigawatt hours meaning to scale to the requirements of JUST United States households, world battery volumes would have to be ramped up 67x and that would only meet current demands of American individuals. Now include commercial requirements as well as the rest of the world, the problem appears insurmountable. Are we gunna make it bros?
