The fundamental basis of a PhD IS WORKING. In most countries, there isn't even coursework in PhD. That stops at Master's. In the US, PhD lumps in a master's and had 2 years of coursework typically, followed by 2-5 additional years of teaching and research. To get a PhD, you need to become an expert in a field niche that is novel through your own research. PhD is literally just working (and working a LOT, say goodbye to nights and weekends).
