>>13161072He seems to have been more interested in catching fame and glory than actually ensuring his work was published within a reputable journal (YouTube videos are not a reputable journal).
He also majorly underestimated the potential response by the CCP for doing this without their approval... So, not a very smart move in that regard.
Lastly (and I've yet to really look into the details of why he chose to specifically do the procedure this way), it appears that he ran the CRISPR treatment on a blastocyst that was around 100 cells worth at the time. Seeing as CRISPR Cas-9 has an error rate that isn't close enough to being 0, and seeing as it would have had to edit each of these 100 cells individually, this could potentially really end up fucking the lifes of those twins further down the line. Not very humane in my opinion, and not very smart if we're looking to positively expand the field/practice of human genome editing forward within the publics eye...
Like, if he wasn't at least somewhat concerned about getting positive PR within this field, then why specifically focus on the removal of a HIV-1 co-receptor instead of something significantly easier? And if he didn't give a damn what society thinks, then why publish it on YouTube instead of continuing the experiment in secret?... In my opinion, it's a pretty shoddy way to go about genome editing.
What I really don't understand in all this is, is why he didn't just attempt this procedure on sperm and egg cells, instead... Like, why on a blastocyst?
