For thick solutions, something like 21-23 Ga may be necessary. That is typical for oil based carriers, although 25 Ga is also usable, but slower.
Larger gauges are used for pulling from vials and are typically around 18 Ga. There are very small gauge needles, such as 31 Ga that are for water based solutions such as insulin.
The covid vaccine has a very low viscosity, so 25 Ga is most common.
