Scientifically speaking and without appealing to emotion, is there any reason to value a child's life as much as we do? It's always "women and children first". Now, women have reached equality and aren't part of that group anymore, they can join men. But why children first? Compare a 50yo scientist with PhD, multiple discoveries made, with a toddler. If you were forced to choose who to save why would you pick the child?
For all intents and purposes, a child until the age of 1 is no different than a pet. It's just an creature that eats, sleeps, shits, needs to be cleaned and does no more than that. Until the age of 10, children are still absorbing information. They have nothing to give back yet.
On the other hand the 50yo has already contributed to humanity and has much more to give.
From an economically point of view it would be an incredible loss. Years and years went into building that genius.
The child meanwhile, is pretty much the same as any other child. Sure, you lose those 9 months of time and welfare that it takes to create a kid. Probably 1 more year of welfare for parents when the kid is out of the womb. But is it comparable to the loss of a fully grown man? I think not.
