An analogy: two descriptive traits of light are wavelength and colour, yes they correspond to one another but they describe different things. Colour describes our perception of the light whereas the wavelength is a more physical description of the light.
I'll make it very simple for you with a topical example of the two terms meaning something different, to show why the existence of the words is useful. The biological sex of effeminate men (we can say traps if that's easier for you) is male, but socially they stray from the standard male gender role.
This is not to say that they are not male, simply to showcase the use of the two terms and how they can describe different things.
