>>13139127It’s all retarded. They don’t have a plan for energy when there is not enough wind, except buy more gas from Russia.
Now I’m not a Russia hater, in fact I am ethnically half Russian, but I think
it’s really dumb for a very industrialized nation with high energy requirements, practically the headquarters of NATO in Europe, which insists on giving economic sanctions and such to Russia because of Crimea and other perceived aggressions, to put itself in a position where it depends on Russia for energy.
So then why?
Well I think that this is a consequence of democracy basically. Ecologists have managed to sell enough electors on “degrowth” or windpower and other memes, as well as on an exaggeration of the dangers of nuclear power. The ecologists in power believe it, but don’t actually understand shit either. Many other politicians are in the awkward position where they know it’s a terrible idea, but that they will lose elections if they disagree too vocally.
So decommissioning nuclear is a big bone thrown to the ecologists, and the distant end of coal reflects the reality that there is no actual alternative. They hope that either voters will come to their senses, or that some new tech will appear, or in the worst case their careers will come to a peaceful end and someone else can deal with actually getting rid of coal.
Right now Germany spends a mind boggling fortune switching between coal and wind, since wind farms are guaranteed to sell their power when they produce it, and switching in such an unpredictable manner is pretty complicated apparently.
It’s a big stalemate basically.
