It isn't. If your nose gets blocked because of dust or swelling, you can fall back on breathing through your mouth as a backup. It's unfiltered but reliable.

Hypothesis: oxygen in the bowels will let a person stay longer underwater

Experiment: Have subject submerged under water several times to establish a base time.
Then pump pure oxygen into bowels of subject and seal with a butt plug, see how long they can stay under water.
