Since /sci/ is (allegedly) the smartest board, can you explain how such a level of cognitive dissonance on a societal level emerges? Corona is just an example, there are many areas where such absurdities are common.

It's pretty easy. Most people don't actual use critical thinking or base their opinions on facts and logic. Instead most people follow social cues. They are herd animals, and have been conditioned to obey authority and group consensus.

Thus when the authority (media, government, etc.) dictates something, they all begin to follow, basically unquestioning. When a mass of them all starts to do it, it reinforces this behavior. The same suspension of disbelief that happens when they watch whatever dumb movie happens when they watch CNN. They don't question the plot holes or contradictions.

Consensus is a meme, the only reason science is able to progress is that scientists are autistic about their cognitive dissonance that they'll eventually change their mind or die. Either you're significantly overestimating the fatality rate for influenza during that season, or very few people actually caught the flu, keeping the deaths down. There was very little rise in all-cause mortality in 2017 and 2018.

They had cross-immunity from previous coronavirus infections. But that doesn't change the fact that CFR is based on deaths per case, not what you imagine deaths would be with or without treatments. The CFR for SARS-CoV-2 in 2020 was 4-5x higher than influenza during 2017-2018.

I'm not guessing. CFR is simply deaths divided by cases. You can't just going changing the number because of what you estimate the CFR would be without vaccines and treatment. The CFR for SARS-CoV-2 in 2021 will likely be much lower than in 2020, that doesn't retroactively change the number for 2020.

Do you want to say that the CFR will decline now that vaccines and better treatments are available? That's fine. No idea, but the novel H1N1 strain in 2009 is probably most comparable, and it turned out to be milder than the typical seasonal flu. Novel doesn't have to mean deadly.

I don't think people going without a haircut for a few months is destroying their lives, people losing their jobs is certainly pretty serious though.
But hey if you wanna consider the third world, disruptions caused by lockdowns to supply chains of essential resources (food, water, medicine etc) have supposedly lead to a LOT of deaths.

For example we prefer to talk about plane crashes and don't really care about some dude that died in a car crash.
