You know you're supposed to imagine what the board would look like after your movement, imagine some of the ways the opponent could respond, and make sure as many of your pieces are protected as possible right?
I mean, 2 years, Jesus Christ. If you suck at the game so much just find something better to do.
Imagine if you had spent those two years learning maths, coding, a language, even fucking carpentry. What would you have now?
You need to revealuate your life choices, and plan a new path for yourself. It sounds like you're just wandering around aimlessly seeing if something will fulfill you. Set up some goals for yourself and work towards them.

Chess.com 900s are surprisingly nasty. They make few blunders but if you play conservatively they usually break apart. I win most games.

Look anon, I'm not gonna lie to you, 900 is absolutely terrible, especially after 2 years.

You should accept not being as bright as you hoped, deal with it and keep moving forward. You will find out later in life what you can achieve through grit and perseverance.

It wasn't until I finished my first year at engineering I developed the ability to really push myself in intellectual pursuits. Only then did I reach >2000 ELO. I was a very weak minded, low effort person at your age, and I never would have believed I'd end up at the top 5% percentile of players in lichess, you may still discover you're capable of more than you think.

I considered joining a club. I keep making sloppy mistakes. If I can reach 1600 Elo I'll die happy.

I can't help you with the optimal path, I can just describe my path.

I just played a lot, didn't ever give up (try getting in the habit of never surrendering, no matter how bleak it is), and I played the puzzles on lichess, they're really fun.

But I know there are books and mentors and programs, that could maybe be a better way, as you wouldn't learn all the bad patterns, which you would then later have to unlearn. That never appealed to me because I just wanted to play chess, but if you want to get very good very fast, I think that's the way.

Do not try to "learn". Just replay games by masters on your board.
Learn the names of openings, and absorb the ideas behind them.
Learn their "tricks". And after a while learn that the tricks are not just tricks,
they are just tactics that fit into strategies.
Be sure to know how to deal with basic endgames.

It all depends on what happens after his 25 - 26's. If he ain't actively learning, if he ain't doing exercise or living a healthy life, then yes its over. However, if he does take care of himself there's nothing stopping him.
