Because the scientific drilling was a byproduct of the developing drilling technology. Once tech matured, the funding for scientific drilling also disappeared, mostly. Also the soviet union, which was the most active in this, is no more.

Current attempts are focused on not so deep but scientifically valuable drilling. Nips want to drill the seafloor, for example.

No, there's plenty of research based on remote sensing on this (which only gets better because of all the recent compressive sensing and computational imaging tech advancements). Drilling can be neither comfy nor easy at those pressures and temperatures. Roughly 20km+ is possible with the current tech, deeper than that everything breaks, you need to use active systems which have to be developed. And wide holes are out of the damn question at these depths, entirely. Even Kola Superdeep was highly experimental, they had multiple failures and started over several times.

It is much more simple to instead examine the cores of other, smaller bodies in the solar system.

We will learn much more from them more quickly than if we spend decades trying to break through the thick crust and mantle of the earth.

There is nothing good down there just heat. Although it has been proposed that helium produced by radioactive decay in and around the core may collect in cavities. Who knows what else could be in them. Wait till I am living elsewhere in the solar system before you go digging so deep.

I think the probalem was that when they were drilling the earth was more plastic like than they though at that depth.

Heat engines work on a difference.

If you bring all that heat to the surface, the surface gets hot.

It makes much more sense to live within your means and convert the energy that is already here from the sun and is going to continue to come from the sun whether we convert it or not.

The rest of the equation is to not need all that energy by using less to get more.

He's a mining billionaire and is investing in a form of pulsed power drilling to break up hot granite deep underground so as to enable geothermal anywhere. Seems the major difficulty at this point is shielding the electronics from the temperatures that deep, but he expects his company can solve that within 10 years or so.

To extract work from superheated steam with a turbine/other heat engine, you also need a way to condense it back to a liquid. In a NPP this is achieved by evaporating water in a cooling tower or by having access to a large body of water to use as a heatsink.
