So if your tracing system is good enough you always hit the target.
That's the first advantage.
The second advantage is that it is an energy weapon. That means every structure which can contain big amounts of energy, like nuclear driven ships. Don't have to supply the laser with ammo.
The contras are: You cant hit targets beyond the curvature of the earth. As well, as soon the laser is strong enough to ignite air (partially ionizing it) it looses massive amount of energy into the atmosphere. You can work around this problem using 2 not so strong lasers. Which then needs a better tracking system.
How ever weapon-grade lasers, will have always a power level that they give up energy to the atmosphere. There for they are only good at short distances.
Also i believe with an enough advanced laser system you cant use rockets anymore. And need to start to use gausses guns.
