Overall, we had the NECESSITY to invent those things in ancient times. We invented many things. Life was harder. Work was harder. They already knew steam and had toy steam engines... but they did not use it for real work for some reason.
In fact, even if steam was useful and only efficient for only moving smaller machines, tailoring for instance was a good application.
