A year is a common unit of time that is universally known by society. They could use units like aeons or megannum but few would know what those units represent. Plus they are ultimate derived from years anyway.
You could pick Galactic Year, which is the time it takes the Milky Way to rotate once but not only is that not a value most people know, they have no intuitive sense of how long it is. And it really isn't any different than measuring the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. It's still a celestial body rotating being used a unit of time.

You have to keep in mind that all measuring units are Man made and thus there has to be some man-known phenomenon off of which it is based on. Also important to know is that measuring units are units of comparison.

's answer, you could also go with something like Carbon-14 half lives (~1.81E11 seconds, or 5730 years) which is also used for stuff like carbon dating.

We could design some cockamamie measure of time using those but it would end up being the same rough estimate.
